Teach me thy way O Lord; I will walk
in thy truth: unite my heart...

A school room

When Dad was a 13 year old boy, he remembers his teacher giving the challenge
to the 8th grade students, for them to memorize all of the states, cities, rivers,
 mountains and capitals plus to also remember how to spell the names correctly.

Dad drew the United States map on the school blackboard with chalk after he
  memorized all of it in 15 days. He was the only child in his class who was able
   to do this in that short of time.. The teacher whose name was Mr. Kline, said it
  took himself 30 days..Dad's reward was $2.00 and he was entitled to take a
day off later to go fishing. Needless to say, my father was delighted.

Dad remembers catching two trout and he also found 'free lunch' on the
 side of a river bank where he was fishing..(which was an egg salad
 sandwich on the ground covered with ants that someone else had earlier
 discarded.) He wasn't squirmish as he brushed the ants off the bread and
 ate the sandwich anyway.  He claimed it didn't make him sick or kill him,
 as he was living proof of living to old age.

Dad and Mom with puzzle

United Pieces Button

Together two long time married mates
Who live in Wisconsin's.. United States,
Took an imaginary spin around the map;
They spent time to use their 'thinking cap'
Oe'r scattered puzzles pre-cut  pieces...
To fill the patterned  card board creases!

Thoughts flooded back to remind Dad
Of years ago....When he was just a lad;
He sought hard to win a treasured prize!
Visions of dollar signs so filled his eyes
 In his country classroom of a small size.

Dad's revered school teacher, Mr. Kline
Challenged his students to fully learn
The map of United States to keep in mind
While they studied for the goal to earn.

It took Dad just 15 days to memorize;
HE WON! ... HE WON!... to his surprize...
Two dollars was pretty good money then,
For a boy who came from a family of ten!

Dad's dream again was to write the states;
With chalk on another school blackboard;
To unite them from heart to proudly record,
Before he entered Heaven's Pearly Gates..

 Dad has now entered the Pearly Gates
He was granted a fresh new slate
To write and so proudly record
With chalk on Heaven's blackboard
The map of the United States...

His final reward?
United peace with the Lord..

My picture of the little school room was shot
at the "Little Red School House Museum" in
Ladysmith, Wi.  My father's class room where he
went to grade school was very similar to this.
